Prof. Simon Williams, Cardiologist








Professor Williams is a Cardiologist at Wythenshawe Hospital, Manchester. He holds private clinics at the Alexandra Hospital, Cheadle (Tuesdays and Fridays), the Spire Regency Hospital, Macclesfield (Monday evenings) and The Wilmslow Hospital (ad hoc). Approachable & knowledgable

Professor Williams was appointed as a Consultant Cardiologist at Wythenshawe Hospital in 2005 after training in Cardiology in Sheffield, Leeds and Liverpool.  He  is an experienced General Cardiologist with specialist interest in heart failure (leading the service at Wythenshawe Hospital) and an expert in: palpitations, breathlessness, chest pain, blood pressure problems, syncope and dizzyness, chronic fatigue, preventative cardiology and risk factors including lipids.  He also has a specialist interest in cardiology and cancer (cardio-oncology) and holds an appointment at the Christie Hospital, Manchester. He well known for his approachability and being able to put patients at ease.

 

Prof Williams is the immediate past Chair of the British Society for Heart Failure (BSH), the national professional charity for heart failure, having sat on the board over a 10 year period. https://www.bsh.org.uk/about/board. He is also an ex board member of British Cardiac Society (BCS). 


Prof Williams also has a research interest in heart failure with over 120 peer reviewed journal publications and is an honorary Professor at the University of Manchester. He frequently gives invited lectures at national and international conferences and was the Clinical Expert on NICE technology appraisals for heart failure medications, Ivabradine (2010), Sacubitril-Valsartan (2016) and Empagliflozin (2021).


He sits on several national panels advising health policy including the NHS long term plan (heart failure and valve disease) and has recently advised NICE and NHS England during the COVD pandemic. He is co-author of the 2020 British Heart Foundation (BHF) document “Heart Failure: a blueprint for change” https://www.bhf.org.uk/what-we-do/policy-and-public-affairs/transforming-healthcare/heart-failure-report.


Prof Williams is the clinical expert leading heart failure national awareness campaigns  (www.fightingfailure.co.uk; /www.bsh.org.uk/the-f-word) – national awareness campaigns developed by the BSH, partnering with other organisations such as the British Heart Foundation (BHF), the British Cardiac Society (BCS) and the UKs patient charities.


He lives in Hale with his long suffering wife and 2 children. He is a supporter of Altrincham FC and enjoys skiing, running and Coronation Street.
